Message from the Headteacher 3 February 2017
3rd February 2017
We have had a really good week at Dr Thomlinson Middle School. This week it has been Active Citizenship Week. The week especially looked at British Values as defined by the Department of Education as: democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
On Tuesday Year 7 & 8 took part in a History workshop on the Suffragette movement. On Wednesday Say Two Theatre Company were in school. They delivered a Theatre Workshop showing the way British rights have evolved since the Magna Carta and performed a play of Animal Farm, the George Orwell. The school also held a Mock Election, using the Election Pack provided by the British Parliamentary Education team. Year 7 & 8 divided into four political parties – The Tomorrow Party; The Transform Party; The Vision Party and The Progress Party and, after drawing up their manifestos, began a four day campaign.
The election was run by our Electoral Team comprising of Ewan; Jack; Joe and Jacob. This team ensured that everyone had the opportunity to register to vote and then ran the election process. Jack announced the results of the election as follows:
“Here is the result of the election in the constituency of Dr Thomlinson Middle School.
Of those eligible to vote five chose not to register. Of the voting papers received, there were 4 rejected papers.
The votes received by each of the parties were as follows:
Progress Party – 9 votes
Transform Party - 109 votes
Vision Party – 20 votes
Tomorrow Party – 10 votes.
After application of the election rules I declare that the following Party is deemed to be elected as the representative party for the constituency of Dr Thomlinson Middle School – well done to the Transform Party.”
Well done to the winning party and especially to Finlay; Juliet and Freddie who together gave the speeches during the debate. Also well done to Jack; Ewan; Jacob and Joe for all their hard work in administering the election. All four of Electoral team won a Headteacher award.
Active Citizenship Week finished with Year 7 & 8 students helping to further develop our school pond and forest school areas. We were prepared for cold weather and hot chocolate for everyone was served in the morning however we were blessed with a lovely day. All the students really helped to further improve the school.

The film is ICE AGE 5 - Collision Course (in my opinion the most superior of all the ICE AGE films) and the cost is £5. There is a letter attached to this email. So far only 20 people have taken up this great offer. If anybody else wishes to attend then please return the letter by Monday, 6th February.
