Message from the Headteacher May 26th

26th May 2017

Dear Parents & Carers,

It has been a very busy final fortnight of this half term.

On May 15th 24 Year 5 & Year 6 children represented our school in the annual Quad kids athletics competition at King Edward High School.  Mr Heath was very impressed with the commitment and endeavour of those who took part.

On May 18th it was the turn of our KS3 Girls Rugby teams to compete in a 7a’side rugby competition at Ponteland Rugby Club.  Again both teams were very competitive and both enjoyed notable victories.

May 19th was set aside for our school to celebrate the life and work of the Venerable Bede; Bede being one of our three Houses (the other two being Aidan and Cuthbert).  Samuel and Gus, our two Bede House Captains, wrote and devised the service and all those pupils in Bede House came together in the school hall to celebrate Bede’s Day.  Thanks to Reverend Peters for taking the service and to Mrs Brinley who once again provided the musical accompaniment.

On the afternoon of May 19th we had 12 students take part in a Regional Litquiz competition at Chantry.  The three teams – answering a number of very testing rounds of questions about books – did very well with one of our teams even winning a round!

Saturday May 20th saw the school contribute to the Magic Weekend at St James Park, Newcastle.  For those of you who are not ardent fans of Rugby League – the Magic Weekend is an occasion where all 12 professional Rugby League teams come to one central venue to play six league matches.  For Dr Thomlinson Middle School however, the real event of the magic Weekend was the contribution of forty of our students to the half-time interval dance sequence.  They did very well and worked very hard in preparation for it as the learning and rehearsal of the dance sequence took a number of lunchtimes as well as a two hour pre-match rehearsal on the day of the event.  I can quite safely say it was the finest performance I have ever seen by any team on such hallowed turf.  Well done to all those concerned and thanks to Mr Heath for introducing the school to this great event.

On Wednesday, 24th May our Year 5 students went to Kingswood for three action packed days.  Mrs Corbett joined the party on Wednesday and Thursday and I joined the activities on Thursday evening and Friday morning.  We were both very impressed by the attitude of all who took part.  Well done and a good time was had by all.

Thursday, May 25th saw the school participate in the Area Athletics round at Dukes Middle School in Alnwick.  There were some very impressive performances by our pupils and I was delighted to hear that 33 of our students qualified for the next heat (the Inter Area Athletics) at Glendale Middle School in June.

A very busy fortnight of activities was completed today when our Young Leaders and Mr Heath helped run a First School Quad kids Athletics Competition at Dr Thomlinson’s.  The event was really well run and we were delighted to see so many pupils from different school compete in such a positive and energetic ending to a busy but very productive half-term.

It is lovely to hear of further sporting success of our students.  Well done to Jessica in Year 8 who finished 1st in Discus; 2nd in Hammer and Third in Javelin whilst representing Morpeth in the North East Athletics Development League.  Similarly well done to Edward; Charlie; Seth and Dan in Year 6 who all won awards in the Alnwick Rugby Prize giving.

Finally many Year Eights are enjoying the final weeks of their Fifty Book Challenge, with Danny, Lily and Gus currently leading the field . The deadline for deciding our winners will be Tuesday 20th June 2017, so please make the most of the holiday to read, read, read!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, June 5th.

Cheers,

Liam
